What is a session with a Lark tutor like?

“How often does a kid look forward to seeing his/her tutor? She handles our daughter beautifully; she is calm (when our daughter is NOT), and firm when she needs to be, but always in a supportive way. Needless to say, we love her!”

  • We meet students where they are. We don’t assume everyone learns the same way. It’s our mission to discover what unique combination of approaches works best for you or your child.

  • We alternate between content review & real-time coaching.  Good test prep doesn’t just analyze score results—it addresses the point of performance. We coach students through practice tests so that they improve their process and develop the ability to coach themselves.

  • Tutors also know the power of role reversal. The idea is simple: we ask our students to teach concepts they just learned back to us. This vastly improves retention and builds confidence, ultimately leading to expertise.

  • Lark tutors are responsive to student energy levels and can adapt the tone and intensity of a session as needed. We know when to push and when to celebrate victories. Both are important!

The work

We choose assignments that build critical thinking skills and strengthen core knowledge. If a student needs to improve their number sense, we provide training exercises for better pattern recognition and confidence in basic arithmetic. For students struggling to read complex passages, we provide close reading exercises that help them mine texts for meaning. If a student feels stressed during timed tests, we do coaching exercises to improve pacing and emotional regulation.

A standard weekly assignment set includes problem sets, skill-building tasks, reading passages, and practice tests/sections.

  • High school students usually spend 1–3 hours per week on assignments.

  • Adults preparing for graduate exams typically study for at least 5 hours per week.

Each tutor has their own preferences, but the goal remains the same: an engaging and meaningful tutoring experience that leads to a fantastic score.

Online learning

Our tutors primarily meet with students over Zoom. We fully recognize that this approach may not work for everyone. For driven and committed students, we believe zoom tutoring is not only more effective than in-person but also fun and personal. One-on-one tutoring with us will never feel like sitting through a lecture—our sessions are collaborative, individualized, and compassionate. We do what we do because we love our students and want them enjoy our meetings.

What our students say:

“Meeting with Julie every Wednesday in our little Zoom container during the absolute trainwreck of 2020/2021 kept me grounded and sane. As happy as I am with our result, I already miss learning from and chatting with her every week.” – Lulu, Princeton ‘18

“Julie makes Zoom interactive and conversational. I am always learning and given the attention I need in order to fully understand the lessons being taught. She makes sure that I understand and makes the sessions feel personal even through a computer screen.” – Grace, Immaculate Heart '23
